The Bates Method for Improving Eyesight is a method discovered earlier this century by Dr. WH Bates, MD (1865-1931), a well-known American ophthalmologist, developed by him and his followers to improve sight and restore the natural habits of seeing, which have been lost by the strain, tension and misuse resulting eye. Thus, the aim of the method is to teach people with vision problems may easily and attentive because under which the eyes and work together harmoniously mind giving a good view. Since the Bates Method is a way to improve vision and restore the natural use of the eye in re-learning the art and the ability to see, so there is no medical treatment, but method of rehabilitation in the form of both active learning, like learning a skill such as drawing and painting or how to play tennis, and also aware of how susceptible to appreciate what we see as the appreciation of a painting, a beautiful garden or a cathedral. According to Dr. Bates research, the focus of the eye is accomplished by the action of extrinsic muscles that surround it. These muscles are relatively well balanced and are easily disturbed by the conditions of nervous stress and emotional pressure so that refractive errors are produced. However, the eye muscles are not likely to orient new physical training, since, according to research Kinesiological made in the USA, stress or weakened muscles are fatigued by exercise. It is not part of the Bates Method to “strengthen” the eye muscles by exercising, despite recommendations made in popular books and articles on the subject. The relaxation will always precede the year. It is necessary to realize that the eyes are completely passive. They do not own will but, instead, follow the interests and mirror the activity of the mind. They are in principle voluntary officials, but in many cases are unconsciously treated as unwilling slaves, starved and abused constantly. Therefore, to close regular eye, let them sit, listen and ask them what they need, can be the first step in restoring a normal balance of their use. The eye sees the better she looks directly while at the same time there is a constant awareness of the entire field of vision. This can be summarized as a state of attentive awareness, reflected in the extraordinary structure of the light receptive cells of the retina, composed of two distinct but complementary depression minute in the center of the retina called the fovea, which is the point of maximum clarity, and the surrounding area of peripheral vision, by far the greater part of the area of the retina. The fovea in the eye that sees normally picks up every detail, and is constantly changing, vibrating in harmony with the interests of the attentive mind on what he wants. This may be called the active part of the vision, receptive to pressure from contraction. It is supported by the responsiveness of the rest of the rods and cones, the vast majority in number, who receive the entire field of vision and can be called the passive view, which is sensitive to movement, space and is expansive. These two processes are complementary and are similar to the Chinese idea of Yin and Yang, entire field and spot focus. Together they constitute the world as we see it. When the eye is subjected to stress, the light loses its central focus and enlarges the displacement vibration slows and becomes rigid stare, while the contracts of the visual field. The eye ceases to be a channel for the energy of the attentive consciousness. Since in most cases of interest to see the sight defective was replaced by filtering, trying to see, or boredom, self-criticism, etc., the first step in improving the view is stimulate interest in suggesting the student replaces the attitude of trying to see that the search for something, eg different colors, trees, birds, flowers – whatever is convenient and accessible the particular state of vision without glasses or contact lenses. From this point, students begin to learn how to do it without glasses, in whole or in part, as appropriate, for it is evident that the view can not improve while glasses are worn. The circulation around the eye is stimulated by encouraging blinking eyes and closed their eyes to water, morning and evening. The eyes are also nourished and relaxed by the use of light, leaving the swing head, eyes closed against the sun or a lamp. Needless to say that the sun never looked directly. The eyes are always palming rested after making light. The fundamental way to relax is by palming. Palming is the practice of covering the closed eyes with the palms of the hands while sitting upright, so that the eyes are rested in the dark, relaxed by the warmth and healing energies through their hands. The mind needs to be engaged in an activity useful or interesting as talking with a friend, listen to the radio, thinking or visualization, so it does not interfere with the eyes and prevent them from relaxing. Palming usually results in an immediate but temporary improvement in vision. Continued practice of palming often leads to major changes for the better, and is the single best way to help the eyes. The view is further helped by learning relaxation in movement through the use of various types of swinging, which also helps restore the natural vibratory movements of the eyes as well as expand the awareness of the visual field. Firstly, the student stands with feet apart and rhythmically swings from left to right, to deepen the relaxation. Then, the student body turns right and left, leaving the entire body, including eyes move as one. Consciousness movement in the visual field is a sign that the oscillation is well done. A more simple but more versatile is to balance the head and neck only. This is very helpful in releasing tension in the neck, often associated with poor vision. Another observation of the student often reveals poor coordination of movements, hands and eyes, both eyes together. These difficulties with the deepening of relaxation and the development of attention and awareness, and are further helped by providing a point for the mind with activities such as juggling, drawing, dances, ball games , so that the student progresses, more specific approaches can be displayed as needed, working with graphics, reading practices, techniques to encourage the centralization of sight, such as counting, seeking, in comparing, edging, tracing. But he stressed that nothing good will come of trying to see the all too common reaction of students when presented with the challenge of identifying letters or reading. It is always necessary to avoid unnecessary conflicts and do the best we can, accepting what is seen, no matter if it is clear or blurred.
